Pimples?

>> Friday, November 12, 2010

It is often said that peanuts can cause pimples and some skin allergies. But it is actually not true to all skin types. Some may need acne treatment that works because they have a really bad case of acne, but others would simply need a facial wash to maintain the skin.

Anyway, last week we passed by the Lancomme display booth at the Orchard, where they do free makeup and some skin tests, but yesterday, we found that they were no longer there. Honey even joked that perhaps, we should have gotten ourselves a free facial and skin test last week if only we had known that they were not to stay there forever, lol..

Anyhow, I learned that Singaporeans secret to a beautiful skin is in what they eat everyday.. More fruits and shakes.. yup, that is what our Singaporean friend, Winnie told us yesterday..

Do You Eat Flowers?

At the Joo Chiat Complex, I was amazed to find that roses are sold not as flowers but as food. I am serious. When I passed by the stall, I thought they were simply selling flowers. But I wondered why they have all the flowers and petals separated and some even cut into smaller pieces. Then the lady told me, "eat lah.."
She said flowers like orchids and roses have medicinal properties for a youthful effect. So I got to think that some of them indeed look younger. Could it be that they eat all those flowers? In my experience, I have learned previously that flowers are used for flavoring but not eaten directly though. This was quite a surprise, really..

Grace's Foodies

Grace, our Tito's house help had been feeding us well. She most of the time worries if the food she serves are good or not. With her cooking, you would surely want to buy a truckload of diet pills, as her cooking is irresistible.

On our first week, here were the foodies she served us that I truly savored the flavor.
Imagine, during this meal, she was so worried if we would appreciate the taste or not. But of course, when we tried the food, we gave her thumbs up. Grace is a good cook. I wouldn't be surprised if she marries a man who would like to eat and eat, lol..

Anyway, the journey to our diet and weight loss continues, but we try to avoid Grace's foodies by buying our own at the market place. And maybe next week, we'll replace breakfast and dinner with Herbalife, alongside our daily exercises.

Lanzones in Singapore

These Lanzones are huge and sweet and they come clumped as they are sold. So much different that the Lanzones we have back home. Well, actually, they are not grown here in Singapore but were imported from the other parts of Asia. There are no farms or fruit trees in Singapore. That I was told. So if you drop by their market place and see lots of fruits, they are imported.

I wonder if they also have mines here. If they do, they would probably be supplying gold or gold bullion to other countries as well.  Anyway, it's good to be able to taste fruits from other countries here. Yes, we may have them in the Philippines, but they taste different that what we have back home. Even Durian here tastes different.  But of course, even if it tastes differently, still it is yummy..

More Eat Lah--- hehehe

Braised Duck Anyone?

This auntie does not need to attend cooking classes because all she has to do is slice up the duck and serve it to us with its sauce. But I, on the other hand, would like to ask her for a private cooking class on how to cook braised duck.

That is what we had yesterday at the Bugis Village food court.. Oh well, cooking classes is helpful for all my friends who are in LA. Why? Because they need to. Hehehe..

Seriously, learning how to cook a great meal would be such a delight.. Imagine people to wow all your food preparations even before they taste your food. The smell alone is a sign that you have reached a mark in the cooking arena. Add gourmet and baking, ohlala..

Anyway, I learned from a friend who is a chef, that knowing how to cook is one's ticket really. It could be to a great friendship, relationship or even a job. Hehehe.. Take it from one of Asia's finest chefs.. He woed his wife, then girfriend, and after three home cooked meals served in candle light, she said yes to the marriage proposal..  Whirlwind romance ei? Not quite.. Lady in Red screams for more lovey dovey after a meal or so.. Way to go..

Going back to the braised duck, which we devoured, Honey and me. It was perfect. I never thought Duck meat could be tender and flavorful. The last time we cooked a duck at home, it took us forever to make the meat tender. Of course, we had a lot of help from the crock pot, hehehe..

Our next agenda would be the Clay Pot Rice with a different flavored bird. I wonder how we'd be able to leave Singapore.. If we get left behind by the plane, I am sure we wuld then be able to fly.. Since day one, we have been eating bird, hahaha.. Wings are growing at my back--- see them lah.. hahaha

The Machines..

Honey and I are into exercise and diet since the day we discovered the exercise machines at the Woodlands Ring grounds. Perhaps they are all effective, I feel I have lost weight so much more than when I was not moving even a finger. If this is getting better and better, I do not think I will still need to read or search for liposuction reviews anymore.

The Space Walk is my favorite. But then again, if you keep exploring the city for new discoveries, chances are, the dieting and the goal to lose weight while in Singapore is totally difficult--- so many stalls/stores to explore and try out their foodies.

Food and Culture

This Singapore trip is fattening despite the fact that we keep walking from all directions. Food is everywhere, and ironically, there are also an abundant supply of women's dresses that do not seem to fit me, lol.. Such displays for shorter and much petite women. Frustrating as it may seem but, I take it as a sign that I need to scrimp on teh food to give room to shopping--- wahahaha..

On second thought, we are here to assimilate the culture and be one with the people. And food is, after all, a part of cultural heritage and somehow it is in food where the uniqueness of a people are noticed. So we went our way sampling different foods here and there. Malay food, Indonesian Food, Chinese and of course, the local delicacies that abound. I got to taste the difference in food that speaks clearly of the difference in cultural heritage. For instance, the Rojak from an Indian/Malay restaurant compared to a Singaporean shop.

Which is better?

They are actually the same in weight.. Differs in color, texture and ingredients.. The Malay/Indian Rojak is more like a viand, while the Singaporean is like a snack cum appetizer. Although, I find the Singaporean Rojak to be better because of the peanuts and the vegetables in it---

Lola's Food

>> Thursday, November 11, 2010

The image above was taken during the Deepavali celebration here in Singapore, where we took the holiday as a time for our relatives to meet and bond. I have mentioned this in a revious post on this blog, and well, last week was a blast. This evening Lola Linda and Tito Noel left with Auntie Vicky and Uncle Alex for a cruise. A relaxation cruise to be exact. Well, business people need this as a breather, I hope the four of them will finally be able to relax.
From the day we celebrated Deepavali cum reunion, we have been teasing Lola Linda to enjoy the online games first, and enjoy the real deal when cruise comes.. And with that teasing she would tell us how magical the roulette was, especially when she was winning.. That and well, topic changes into what food she is to eat during the cruise. See, Lola Linda is a diabetic who is self injecting her medicines from Hong kong, as being a Hong Kong resident, her medicines are well provided for by the Hong Kong government. Her personal assistant, or house help would simply prepare her food and take care of the rest.

Anyway, Lola specified that she would like to bring her own vegetable dishes for their cruise, so Grace, her assistant busied herself for two days preparing them..

Barbecue Night

>> Saturday, November 6, 2010

My client was calling me last night but I missed all his calls. Well, I am sure he will just be asking for paper writing tips as he is into writing a proposal essay. Previously, I already recommended him a site that offers free writing help in case I am not able to get back to him. But today he left word that I should get back to him.

Well,we had been busy yesterday since it was a holiday. I was not even able to go online because I helped my Tita Ruby in preparing the food. I mean, I got to stick the chicken into the skewers.. And of course, it was totally a great party. Reunion night for all of us cousins, as well as a goodbye party as Stephanie, Abigail, Kyna and Alexis will be leaving back for the Philippines today.

Love the food. Four kinds of Chicken Barbecue, lots of sea foods and laughter..
Love them shrimps...

and them all being barbecued.. hehehe

Thanks Tita Ruby--- and of course, Tito Noel, for making all of us meet..

Jewelry Cake

>> Thursday, November 4, 2010

Personalized Jewelry is somehow the same as a chef's recipe. It requires imagination, creativity as well as the passion to create to the fullest-- a masterpiece! A lot of people these days would opt for personalized jewelries rather than those that are commonly seen in every jeweler's window.

Anyway, I saw this chef and bakeshop owner the other month and I saw saw all his wonderful creativities spun into delectable treats. What caught my eye was the jewelry cake. A rectangular cake with jewelries as decor. Well, not really real jewelry but those that are made of fondant. Really very nice.. I wish I was able to take pictures to show you here..

Not Too Much Feasting

>> Thursday, October 28, 2010

I guess I have finally understood what it meant when people avoid food and feasts. Perhaps, after all the eating and merry making, comes the quest for the best diet regimen, or the best exercise, or food to lose the extra pounds. Not only for aesthetic reasons but for health as well. I have a friend who always as what diet pills really work, and I previously can not tell her anything mainly because at that time, I didn't take any. It is only now that we are avoiding dangerous foods here in the house. And it is only now that I am taking diet pills. Our party foodies are regulated as much as limited. Not too much feasting because they ruin the health..

How to Dress a Native Chicken

Delicious, isn't it? That is the ever tasty Native Chicken Tinola. All natural flavor, all natural ingredients. Filling, delicious. But of course, one need to know that to derive food from Chicken, the chicken had to be slaughtered. It is quite a pitiful fate for the Chicken. Pitiful because it had to endure all the hardships before it is killed and before it can make a great meal of its very meat..
It starts with starvation for a couple of hours to make  the internal organs manageable enough to clean later on. Then more pain as its neck being is being slit to let blood out into a bowl to keep the blood fresh and clean.
If there is only one person doing the killing, then the chicken will have to experience being stepped on while its neck is split..
If there are two people doing this task, it is easier as the legs and wings will simply have to be clipped all together for it to not escape. But in the photo here, the legs and wings were stepped on.

Most often, when the chicken is no longer living, its body is tilted for more blood to come out. In the olden times, Filipinos get a little form this bowl of blood and draws a cross with it on a birthday celebrant's forehead. That is somehow connected to our cultural belief that spirits also dwell among the living.

This bowl of blood can be used as blood for chicken Dinuguan, or in the case of this recipe, was included as one of the parts of the chicken that everyone will appreciate to take off the feathers....
Anyway, when all else is in order, and the chicken is already lifeless, it is then submerged into a basin of  hot water or newly boiled water is poured over the chicken.
Then the dressing process takes place..

Feathers removed may still be used according to one's creativity.. And washing means, no more feathers as well as unnecessary chicken parts..
This process may be done so many times, then in the end, it will make our chicken meal a very delicious as well as clean and safe dish..
And of course, when there are no more feathers left, it is about time to have the chicken cleaned in the inside and all other matter that's in its outer  covering..

To totally remove the feathers, rub rock salt unto the chicken and continue rubbing until no feathers are left. Rinse the chicken to finalize the cleaning process. When you are already sure that the chicken is really clean already, the it's time to chop the whole chicken into your recipe's desired cut..

Pests and Pancakes?

Gina's boyfriend is a very good cook. The two of them had been seeing each other for two and a half years and well, they are in deed a really good couple. Perfect. Larry, according to Gina, works at one of the Houston pest control centers and that is actually the reason why they met. See, Gina needed someone to help her with termites and Larry came at the right time, at the right moment. And Gina remembers that on the day they met, Larry even cooked for her some pancakes.

It so happened that Gina panicked after seeing roaches and termites that she dropped all her cooked food on the floor. What do you know? Pancakes and Pests somehow make life wonderful, lol..

BULL'S EYE.. hahaha.. Speaking of  a Houston Pest Control Company, I read earlier about Bulls Eye Pest Control which provides termite control, pest control, fire ant control, flea control, and bee control services to residential and commercial customers.

Who knows? Your Larry might just be there.. hehehe

To Remove Oil from Fried Food

>> Wednesday, October 27, 2010

There are many ways to remove oil from fried food. One of the many ways is to place the fried dish on a paper towel. In our house, whenever we run out of paper towels, we use tissue paper. Quite expensive compared to paper towels, but it's worth it.

FYI: Before serving the dish, make sure that you have removed it from the paper towel otherwise, it would be useless to have them anyway. After removing the paper towel, you will notice that a huge amount of oil is absorbed by the towel.

When frying Lumpia and Fried Chicken however, we use an oil drainer or a stainless colander where we let the oil drip from the colander to the plate that catches the dripping oil.

Endoscopy and Sewer Video Inspection

When leaks occur in sewer pipes, it can  sometimes be due to several factors. It could be caused by corrosion due to daily wear and tear or by some broken pipes,  some clogged pipes and  much much more. When these problems occur, believe me, it's not just a Las Vegas water heater that you will need.

Clogged drainage and clogged sewer lines brings huge disasters. Plumbers, even when they are professional plumbers who work for so many years already, had to probe for such clogs blindly. Good thing that the new technology of sewer video inspection is at hand. So even if the plumber is still new in the business, he gets ample assistance and the said clogs can be seen and their causes easily determined. This process is quite similar to the human endoscopy.  Sewer video inspection used in a Las Vegas sewer repair is not only limited to residential houses, not only for oil and gas pipelines but goes beyond a long way, even in the military use for espionage activities because it provides a visual telepresence.

Some people might argue about using a sewer video inspection, but it actually adds to the cost of repairs, which are easily taken off by the quality service provided by the Las Vegas emergency plumber and plumbing services.

Picky Eater Even at 60..

Carmelo is a picky eater even when he is already sixty years old. He does not eat what is not familiar to him, nor would he ever try out some new delicacy. Well, it is both a good thing as well as a bad thing. Good because he is cautious about what he puts into his mouth, and bad because he has missed so much in experience as well as learning a few things or so. He is always into the safe side. I bet he would even buy epa certified lead test kits if only to keep himself safe.

Well, should we blame him? Actually, he has probably reached sixty with less complications because of his cautious nature..

White Humba

>> Tuesday, October 26, 2010

I am always in for experimentation as well as creating things. Yesterday was my father's birthday and I cooked WHITE HUMBA. Hmm. You must be thinking I am crazy for doing so. Or for calling it so.But here's a secret, I didn't use vinegar and soy sauce in this recipe. Instead, I substituted vinegar with pineapple juice and calamansi, while salt replaced soy-sauce.. Then I doubled the amount of garlic, onions and bell pepper..

And believe me, it was oh so yummy.

Golden Peanuts

The photo you are looking at is not gold nor scrapping from a gold bullion. But they sure look golden and yummy to me. After the burial and nine days wake for my sister's fiance's mom, they came home and brought lots of goodies from Kauswagan, Lanao. The foodie above is similar to peanut brittle, only it was differently done. If you eat it, the peanuts are enveloped with a thin layer of melted sugar or caramelized sugar, unlike the usual peanut brittle, where peanuts are clumped together with caramelized sugar to make them glued as one. In fact, this has a different name, and not called as Peanut Brittle.
