Food Along the Way...

>> Monday, April 11, 2011

We had an amazing week.. We went to Cebu to visit the Virgin Mary of Simala in Lindugon, Sibonga, Cebu Province.. Actually, we came here in Camiguin first then took the longer route of going to Cebu via Jagna and Tagbilaran Bohol, then took the bus going Oslob, got down at Lindugon and took another ride going up Simala.. It was a very long journey.. But for my sister, it means, no wearing of her nursing uniform, as she has a week to enjoy before their review for NLE.. But of course, they wouldn't be wearing nursing uniforms during their review.. Not even scrub tops or pants.. hehehe.. But the will be housed so the week was a breather for her so busy and tiresome schedule...

Anyway, the trip was also like a journey of food, as we had to eat along the way..

The first foodie was the Empanadas and Fresh Lumpia from Balbagon Port, in Camiguin, when we were about to leave...

They were sold by a vendor who was authorized to enter the lounge... They were warm and yummy.. I loved the creamy sauce of the Fresh Lumpia and the crunch in every bite of the Empanadas...

When we arrived in Jagna, we had lunch at this foodstore just outside the port, and they served really great food. Too bad I was not able to take a photo of the foodies we ate there.. I remembered taking a photo of the Peanut Kisses we bought from them when we were already at the pension house in Cebu.. No Calamay as they will add to our burden already...

When we were settled at the pension house, we decided to have dinner at Da Vinci's.. I so missed their pizza...

That's the Da Vinci's Masterpiece in white sauce...
Yummy Pizza and Chicken...
Glad my siblings and daughter enjoyed the treat.. The next day, we went straight to Santo Nino Shrine and had old women, and men, pray the "sinulog" on the four of us.. After that, we went and had breakfast, passing by these vendors and their goodies..
But we didn't buy any as I knew we shall meet the same foodies on the road.. on our way to Simala...
These are the Ampao and Bukarilyo which were sold by a bus stop vendor when we stopped at Carcar, Cebu. These vendors would flag a bus, and sell their goodies on board.. Then, they will go down at the next stop..
These are sold according to what kind of bus they are on. For example, I bought two packs of Bukarilyo when we were on board the air conditioned bus and I paid P 40, while the same packs, I only got at P 30 on the non-air conditioned bus, on our way back...

And finally, we went to Metro Gaisano to buy our pasalubong goodies..
If only we had more time to spend in Cebu, we could have explored further, and we could have visited all my favorite foodie places.. Can't believe I missed Casa Verde and Alfredo's Pizza on this trip... anyway, there's always a next time..

Popcorn and Movies..

>> Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Whenever we watch movies, whether in theater houses or at home, we always like to have popcorn and some nuts and drinks.. It could be gourmet popcorn or flavored popcorn or even specialty popcorn. But most times, it's just the regular popcorn that you can pop in the microwave or pop in a kettle.. Ah.. It will always be a delight to eat them..

When we were kids, we usually have Friday nights as movie marathon nights, where my mom would prepare before hand some chips, popcorn and  cold soda.. We would then watch non-stop action of FPJ and all other Filipino and foreign action stars.. It was fun. These days, we watch NOT as a whole family, but usually with the kids or adults only or both, though incomplete.. It is still fun.. But we seldom watch movies in the movie houses as the tickets have soared so high already.. The last movie we watched at the movie house was Red Riding Hood and Lili and River had fun watching it with me.. Although they spent so much time in the washroom, lol...
I have lots of movies in my laptop, that we watch them whenever we can, granted we have the chance to do so or they can watch them on their own, while I am out.. And the popcorn somehow always triggers the mood for watching said movies.. I dunno why it does it so.. hehehe

Hulagway sa Kinabuhi: Letrang K

This is my third time to join this meme... and this time it's letter K in the Binisaya alphabet... I have two things to share because somehow they are related.. The KAKANIN below is what every Filipino would crave for.. On this plate, we have Puto, Suman and KUTSINTA, my all time favorite....

My sister on the other hand, would avoid them, lest she will be selling all her KARSONES (pants) when they no longer fit her, just like this one below... Levis jeans for sale... used a couple of times only...

La Favorita Homemade Ice Cream

>> Saturday, April 2, 2011

Forget about diets, and focus on the image below:

We brought home this half gallon of Mocha Chips Ice Cream from La Favorita scooping station in Divisoria.. The ice cream they sell are so creamy and delicious.. If you are a fan of Haagen Dazs, I am sure you will find La Favorita a better counterpart as it is more affordable, yet tastes the same, if not better..

It is said that La Favorita Homemade Ice Cream is made the old fashioned way, using only Del Monte fresh milk, real fruits in season and all the finest ingredients that you can imagine in your ice cream.

The recipe was said to have been concocted by the late Doña Trinidad Roa Reyes - Pineda, otherwise known as "Wowa Trining". She begun serving her creamy and delicious homemade ice cream to her family and family friends here in Cagayan de Oro City as early as the year 1956. Gosh, my father was yet four years old at the time..

Anyway, below are the flavors of their ice cream:

CLASSIC
Vanilla, Chocolate, Ube & Mocha

PREMIUM
Cookies & Cream, Choco Chips, Lemon Cream Pie and Cheese

FRESH FRUITS
Durian, Avocado, Banana, Mango, Macapuno,Strawberry

CARAMILK (made from fresh carabao's milk)
Original Fresh Milk and Halea de Ube

SUGAR FREE
Flavors vary

Products are sold in liter and 1/2 gallon containers.

They also sell homemade kesong puti.

My sister and I first tried the Avocado Flavor and Strawberry Flavor, respectively.. and we liked it..
For P 35.00 you get two scoops per cone, and a heavenly feeling afterward---

From this scooping cart at Divisoria, I only spent P 290 for the half gallon of Choco Chips ice cream above.. Try this ice cream, you will NOT be sorry.. I promise! Oh and the attendant was very accommodating and nice..

My Friend Paul

Anyone interested to marry a guy, seventy years of age and still active at marathons? Oh and he can cook too. He wants to marry an Asian woman.. If you wanna know him better, then you should ask me for Paul's details.. I am selling my chat friend here in this blog as I know of someone who may want to hook up with him.. hehehe

Kidding aside, Paul is a very nice fellow. I had been chatting with him because of his delicious recipes that he shares.. Who could ever imagine to find such a great friend at one of the chat site or forum that talked about social security disability? I dunno how, but I was asking him a question one day, and we ended up as good friend..

Are They on a Date?

That was my question yesterday afternoon after seeing a couple smooching and doing some hanky panky at McDonalds. Hmm.. The guy and his rocawear looked cute but the girl was quite sloppy.. Anyway, it's none of our business. But I thought, if the kids were around, I am sure they would ask me lots of questions.. Good if the couple are sitting somewhere that is difficult to be seen by a crowd or so, but they are not. They are seated where everyone will see them.. I just wish they would put some sense into themselves and "date" somewhere else.. Where kids will not be corrupted of innocence and hinder them their childhood spontaneity...hehehe

The Pasalubong: Country Style Doughnut

When my sister came home, she brought this box of goodies as pasalubong...
Looking at the brown box makes me think of chocolates and chocolate doughnuts... But when we opened the box and tasted the treat, they tasted different.. They were the same as the goodies you get from Dunkin Donuts, but since there were chocolate frosting, well, we liked them anyway.. It was our first time to try them.. And guess what? They tasted better with hot coffee..
Aside from the doughnuts, she also gave word that clearance laptops are for sale in Manila and asked if anyone would be interested.. Of course, we were focussed on the treat so we had to talk about the latter afterward.. hehehe

Hong Kong Noodle Factory

This food-stand at the Robinsons offers cooked noodles as well as siomai..I am not sure if I have already blogged about them here, but I just saw the pictures from one of my albums, so I think it is better to write the review rather than lose the pics again, silly forgetful me.. hehehe
I was kinda driven by the many dips and sauces they have for their Siomai, so I told my sister that we should try them out... There was the sweet, black & mild sauce made from soya, there was a chili and sweet concoction, as well as the strong chili, and the sweet only..
We also tried their noodles and well, we'd rather stick with the Siomai because of the yummy sauces.. hehehe

Hmm..

How would you feel if your chef is wearing equestrian clothing while preparing your food? What would you think? I know what I would think.. I would think that the chef is an equestrian who had to leave his horse for me, hahaha.. But of course it all depends on my mood and the food served. If it were bad, I would think that the chef bailed out on the restaurant and the owner had no choice but to take over... But that will never happen, I think. Because most restaurants have this code of conduct and dress code for anyone and everyone preparing meals. It should be clean and tidy, thus the Chef's out fit, plus the toque..

Do You Eat NUTS?

A friend of mine told me that eating nuts caused all her pimples to sprout like crazy. I told her that I read somewhere that nuts are not at all the culprit for pimples and acne. She was reading some therapores review when we talked and she told me that she will never eat nuts for the rest of her life..

Chinese people in other parts of Asia are fond or eating Pili nuts as well as Hazelnuts, but they have great skin.. So why is it that nuts are blamed for bad skin or having acne or pimples?
Quite personally, I do not think it is the nuts.. I think people should follow a degree of hygiene for less or no pimples at all.. I will always recommend WASHING..

The Amazing Maid

A maid in Singapore once told me, as we sat side by side on the train, that she uses Google on her employer's refurbished laptop computers whenever she will cook something. I like the thought that the maid uses technology to make her work better. Looking for recipes here and there, and looking for ideas on how to manage a home. I later found out that she was a teacher from the Philippines and that, her salary as a maid in Singapore is even greater than the principal of the school she previously taught.. I was saddened a bit because I am a teacher too, and I asked her if she was made to choose between teaching and being a maid, she told me that being a maid in Singapore was better because she was relaxed and receives a bigger pay. Of course she missed her four kids and her husband.. Some sacrifices she had to pay..  Oh well, I think she and her family deserved better, and better does not mean living a perfect life..

The Missing Photo

I am looking for a photo that I am not sure where I had saved. I checked all my folders in this laptop and I couldn't find it. I checked the PC and I couldn't find it there too.. I checked the memory sticks I have, and not one on any of the four of them.. Oh where could that photo be? I wonder if I have deleted it but I am sure I have not.. So okay, looking for that photo is very important.. As I have a topic where that photo is the best example to show.. I also checked Facebook albums, as well as Multiply and Friendster. Gosh, I have been using the said social networks as my personal remote data backup, hehehe.. But it wasn't there.. Sob.. anyway, I have three days, maybe I have just over looked any of the albums. I will recheck tomorrow...

Caution

>> Friday, April 1, 2011

Drinking is one the favorite pastime of some people. Some drinkers have started this habit while they were still young and not only drinking but smoking as well. Some habits die down as age progresses. I guess this may be because some have developed drinking related health problems and the like. A friend of mine  recommends colon cleansers like colonix as well as food supplements to make the liver strong.. Yeah, prevention is better than cure.. But it also helps to eat the proper foods as well as maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle..

Shredded Coconuts

Do you ever wonder how your shredded coconuts were prepared? Look at this video I found on You Tube for an idea..

When I was younger, I had an experience shredding coconuts manually, and we use the shredded coconut's juice or the so called coconut milk for salads and the Biko that my uncle makes.. It's actually so easy.. All you have to have are two things, the shredder head and a farm stool.. Of course, nowadays, people wont have to do that manually as there are already shredded coconuts available in the market from electronic shredders... And some, would buy those coconut milk that are sold in supermarkets that are either canned or in tetra packs

Craving for Krispy Kreme

This was shared by Chloe of Krispy Kreme in plurk...

She says that this is one way to decorate your doughnut.. Uhm.. Decorating or none, if it's Krispy Kreme then  it will forever be "drool-some".. Now, after this photo, which I borrowed, I am thinking of a box of Krispy Kreme to devour.. hahaha.. I swear, I could finish that in one sitting... But of course, since I am looking forward to seeing my grand kids in the future, I will NOT do so.. hehehe... A doughnut or two, that will be fine. Hmm.. I am thinking, if there will be sales jobs for this doughnut company, and I get hired, a box of doughnut is fine as compensation... Hahaha.. I am serious...

No Need for Advertising

>> Wednesday, March 30, 2011

This is my aunt in Butuan City. She makes the best Budbod and Suman, as well as Biko. It is a specialty food business that their family came to embrace for almost thirty two years. When I visited them last week, I was able to help make these Budbod.. Actually, help in the packaging process, not in the cooking, hehehe.. These are so good, that even the congressman ordered some for his birthday celebration.. which is actually the same date as mine. I can vouch for how good they are as I've grown up with the taste of Budbod along with my grandma's Torta Cebuana and the creamy Binangkal that another aunt makes. But then these days, it's only the Budbod and Biko that stood. With my grandma gone, nobody in the family has sustained the business, even if they do not need advertising flags to make the products known, as they are already famous among my grandma's patrons. And believe me, patrons of my grandma's Torta are aplenty..

The trip in Butuan was meant to rekindle such memories through my aunts' and uncle's cooking, but everything  was different when we went there. Health has become a hindrance, and our trip was shortened because I was called to update my portfolio for DepEd Teacher's ranking..

Anyway, above is one of the Budbod I was about to wrap with the banana leaf.. When we were done, I had my share of the Suman, with sugar.. Suman is actually just the white part of the Budbod.

The Rainy Birthdays...

March 23 was my grandma Viating's birthday, so we went to Oro Gardens to visit her and our grandpa. It was raining terribly but we went anyway.. Aunts Irma and Nancy brought this yummy cake:

We said our prayers and spent a while there until it was really dark already.. Visiting our grandparents had always been a bonding moment for our family. We get to talk about so many things under the sun.. errr. moon.. stars, and even under the rain, lol.. from simple facts, daily life, age spots, new gadgets and everything within scope.. We didn't mind talking under our umbrellas.. The thing is, we were there to pay respect for our grandma and grandpa..

Last night, Aunt Grace invited us to dinner as it was the birthday of my grandma's sister, Nanay Purie. Another rainy birthday.. Unfortunately, none of us could go because of the rain, and some health issues. My father was not feeling well, so we had to ready ourselves for whatever will happen. I too, have had the worst dry cough that I could almost pee while coughing.. After coming home from my cousin's, I rested at home. So today, I am cramming as I have lots of unfinished tasks.. whew..
Anyway, rainy birthdays or not, I lighted a candle for both grandmas.. Missing them.. and their glowing smiles...

Chicken Soup

Back in the contact center days, I remember our team leader, jumping about and eating in between conference calls. Well, maybe she was such an expert to be able to do that.. Multitasking in the team lead level, lol.. As to why I remembered her, blame it on my cousin's Chicken Soup..Chicken soup was TL's favorite...

Photobucket

I visited my cousin yesterday and she told me to bring food to cook. Bought some Slers sausages, Sunpride Cooked Ham and a Chicken Thigh from Swift Foods. The sausage and ham were cooked according to their packet, but the chicken was transformed to a marvelous health soup..

So yummy! This is also my entry for this week's Food Trip Friday. For more, click on the badge below:

Support the RH Bill

When you are a mom, there is nothing that you can think about except how to make things better for your kids and family. Above all, their health, safety and security matters most. I think that is the reason why a lot of responsible parents would opt to have home automation for peace of mind.. But it is all different when you have lots of kids to take care of and the budget is limited. Depressing as it may be, but most of the time, it is only food that has become a priority for some who could no longer afford other needs for the kids and family.

Surely, if we all support  the RH Bill, we can give every Filipino a chance to have a better life. We can give a chance for all kids to go to school, have enough time for nurturance and family growth. We can give NOT only food to appease current hunger, but a better future with NO MORE hunger..

In Moderation

>> Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Eating too much sweet is bad. But total avoidance of sugar and sugary foods is not at all healthy too. Sugar levels in the body need to be in normal state, but it does not mean that eating sugar in moderation is bad. Sure, if there is too much intake of sugar, that will cause a lot of problems, even if one goes to connecticut jungle gyms.. The key is the term "moderation". All in moderate portions.

If one has diabetes, it does not mean that the person will have to quit sugar at all. Instead, sugar levels need to be monitored..  That's what I learned from this brochure I am reading..

Today is a Double Celebration..

>> Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Yes, today is a double celebration as it is my mom's 60th birthday and my parent's 36th wedding anniversary. That means, I am now turning 35.. hahaha..

But then, there will be no party of some sort today.. just a simple family meal that will be full of cake (two delicious cakes from Red Ribbon... Tiramisu and Chocolate Heaven...) and other desserts, lol.. because tomorrow is the graduation of River and Lili and my birthday on Friday.. So we will all have our family treat on Saturday.. Tentatively, out of town..  That would also be an advance party for my sister who is also going to graduate on the 23rd (or 22nd, not sure with the date coz I forgot)
Last night, Honey, River, Lili and I prepared the Mango Float and the Tuna Spaghetti.. In the morning, we shall do the Fruit Salad and all others..  for dinner later.. As to the main dish, we still do not know, hehehe ... See, it's near Holy Week and we can't eat Pork and other meats (but we had beef last night, lol).. Maybe Seafood later tonight.. we'll see..
Anyway, the sauce of this Spaghetti is made from Tuna and Mushroom, Italian style.. yummy! Parents did not get off the bed after we greeted them earlier at 12 midnight, but we sampled the foodies above, hahaha.. taste test before serving them later--- except the cake of course.. we'll have them later--- can't wait! (Drooling Mode)
