Christmas At My Parents..

>> Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Christmas is usually spent sleeping. That has always been the cycle. We have been staying late during Christmas eve until dawn of Christmas day for so many years. It had only stopped last year, as our house had been one of the many houses that had been hit by Typhoon Sendong last year. There was no point of being merry, although we did prepare for Christmas eve dinner.

Anyway, what we eat on Christmas day is usually left-over food from what we have prepared the night before.. and we usually eat in the afternoon because we usually wake up after noontime. But Christmas this year, is different. We were all early. On our part, we had to be early because we have to travel going to our parents' place. My parents were early because they sent my sister and her children together with her boyfriend for their trip to Kauswagan, Lanao--her boyfriend's place. While waiting for my parents, we went to buy some carrots and turnips for my juicer at wholesale prices at Bulua market. And when we reached their place, we were greeted by their Christmas left-overs. Again, ham.. but this time slices of boneless ham from Oro Ham, and some sauteed shrimps. They had Fruit Salad and Spaghetti, and some other sweets. But I was too sleepy to eat, so we proceeded to our Karaoke singing, alternate with sleeping, my sister and I.

Then we had late lunch, had some Chicken and Seafood Sotanghon, plus Humba..

In the late afternoon, we prepared Siomai. We always make Siomai when we are at our parents.. So it seemed like an ordinary weekend activity on Christmas day..

We had dinner and went home at nine in the evening. We would have stayed but my sister has to attend a wedding tomorrow.

Christmas Day Breakfast..

>> Tuesday, December 25, 2012

What we had for breakfast was a choice of what left-over food we had from last night's Christmas eve dinner.. minus the ham, because there was none left of the Sweet Ham. So this morning, we had Country Style Ham of SLERS, plus all the other food from last night. My choice was a slice of Egg Pie, a little Chicken Macaroni and what's left of my Vegetable Pasta Carbonara..

Christmas lunch and dinner were spent at my parents' house..

Our Simple Christmas Eve Dinner

It was just me, Lili, Sweet and an aunt for Christmas. We didn't go to my parents' because I had lots of orders for my online gig. I had to finish them before it becomes Christmas in the other side of the world.  So yay! I had lots of blessings on Christmas eve here in the Philippines. Although I ordered two boxes of Fruitcake from Chef Chary, the sister of fellow mommy blogger, Mommy Tina, we only managed to eat less than half of one box. It tasted really good. I think I will order from her again next year. P 400 a box is worth the taste.

Anyway, I didn't prepare much because there are just four of us. And Christmas day, we shall proceed to spend Christmas with the rest of the family. I was supposed to buy Boneless Ham from Oro Ham, but during our GAD, people from SLERS sold us their Sweet Ham for only P 200 a box, so I bought one, and served it for our Christmas eve dinner. I have another kind of SLERS ham, but it's for Christmas Day breakfast.

We had Green Apples as Lili love Green Apples, and some Candy Canes..

We also had some Goya Dark Chocolates as well as White Chocolate, plus Apollo Checkers and Pandan Stick Wafers, and bite size Baby Ruth Chocolates. We didn't really eat them all, but we enjoyed munching on them after dinner.

Our simple Egg Pie, one that we always loved.. from Goldilocks.

Seedless Grapes and Keso de Bola..

Of course, our pasta dish, which looks messy, thanks to a Vietnamese brand of Vegetable Pasta which I made into Carbonara.. It's actually yummy! I can brag about it and I can even remake the Carbonara sauce if and when I would like to..

My sister's home made, no-bake Brownies..

Another pasta dish, Chicken Macaroni with lots of cheese and onions..

Of course, add some wine and other drinks... Solved!

After dinner, we had movie marathon, while I continued working online, and some beer for my sister and aunt, and wine for me.. We slept late, but woke up earlier than expected..

Merry Christmas everyone!

A Not So Yummy Lunch!

>> Saturday, December 22, 2012

This was what Budgetel served us for lunch yesterday during our GAD. While I was thrilled and happy with the Suman, Mango and Tsokolate, lunch was rather a nightmare. The rice was not as good, the beef was not as tender as I imagine, and the Bihon was soggy and utterly yucky! And of course, I do not like pineapples so there was really nothing good in the plate..

Good thing we had a little Lechon, courtesy of those who donated them, and paid for their corkage so we all could partake it.

And with the Lechon, came the Halang-halang.

The other Lechon had with it, Dinuguan. But I didn't get any photo of it anymore, as all the three mentioned were taken away from our table, before we could all get some for ourselves.

To cap, lunch was terrible, courtesy of Budgetel and the lady who took the food away. Nevertheless, we all had a great time because we were not really there for the food, but for the bonding with friends and colleagues, as well as all the learning from our sessions..

When we arrived in Jagna, Bohol last November 28, 2012, we bought Calamay and peanut brittle.

But I was not sure that they will be okay for consumption on December 3, 2012 so I asked my colleague to buy another one for me..

 And boy, it's yummy...

Healthy and Quick Foods to have for Lunch

The daily family schedule is so hectic these days, it's sometimes difficult to avoid rushing the midday meal. We often grab a sandwich, snack or fast food burger and eat on the go, which doesn't do much for our digestion or our general health.

The key to enjoying a tasty, nutritious and relaxed lunch is to plan ahead and do a little preparation in advance.

Make your own
Sandwiches are always a popular choice for lunch and you can save a fortune if you prepare and make your own rather than picking up ready-made pre packed sandwiches from the supermarket or coffee shop. Pre-packed versions are very often high in saturated fat and salt, so making your own means you can keep an eye on the fat and salt levels.

Choose a tasty wholegrain or seeded bread as an alternative to processed white bread, which has little nutritional value. Pitta breads and flatbreads are a great choice, too and can be easy to fill for a satisfying lunch. The beauty of making your own sandwich is that you can experiment with fillings to make a really flavoursome combination. If you're a devoted carnivore, choose lean meats, rather than high fat, processed versions. Add a burst of flavour with a mature cheddar, blue cheese or feta, together with a huge pile of salad or grilled vegetables such as peppers, courgette and onions. For an extra zing, spread a spoonful of lemon mayonnaise or pesto on the bread.

Wholewheat flour tortillas make tasty wraps. Fill with fresh salad leaves, chargrilled chicken and garlic mayonnaise, or stick to a Mexican theme with grilled strips of lean steak marinated in spices, green salad, tomato salsa and guacamole. Children will love these filled with banana and chocolate spread. For a quick weekend lunch, sprinkle a tortilla with grated cheese and lean ham and top with another tortilla, then warm the whole thing through in a dry frying pan to melt the cheese.

Pasta, rice or bean salads make fantastic packed lunches and are very filling, keeping your energy levels high for a busy afternoon. Add tuna and low fat dressing to wholewheat pasta, or mix brown rice and red kidney beans together with a light dressing for a satisfying snack. Use canned chick peas, cannellini beans and red kidney beans, tossed with some lean chopped bacon, spring onions and vinaigrette dressing. Couscous, with a spoonful of mint jelly, roasted vegetables and some chopped lean chicken breast, makes a tasty and nutritious salad.

Something warm.
For a warming lunch on a cold day, soup or a home-made stew is perfect and can easily be transported to school, college or the office in a wide necked Thermos flask. Make the soup or stew a day in advance so that the flavours improve and intensify. A basic chicken and vegetable soup is a comforting taste of home. Minestrone with lots of lovely fresh vegetables is great for an energy boost, while adding sweetcorn to a creamy chicken soup makes it more filling and adds extra fibre. Spicy root vegetable soups and stews are great for warming up cold tummies, while last night's chilli or curry leftovers can double up as a tasty lunch.

Yoghurt or low fat fromage frais makes a wholesome dessert. Prepare a fresh fruit salad of your favourite fruits in advance, with a dash of apple juice to keep the colour and top with low fat natural yoghurt. Add bottled water or fruit juice and you'll have a well rounded, nutritious packed lunch that will keep you going until supper time.

Frankie's Cafe at Island City Mall, Bohol, Philippines

>> Sunday, December 9, 2012

Our dinner on our last day in Bohol was at Frankie's Cafe in the Island City Mall. We chose the place because it is only found in Bohol, as they do not have any other branches.

We tried their famous foods, or their best selling products like the Cappuccino Frost above and the Chicken Kabob below.

Apple Iced Tea that came with the Chicken Kabob tastes refreshing..

My sister ordered this Mixed fruit Shake that is totally nice..

Her Mixed Fruit Shake went well with her  Minced Beef Kabob.
But before we ate our main orders, we enjoyed the tasty Beef Quesadilla that's to die for..
